Drew won't survive in Boston

Most baseball insiders wondered if Drew would consider opting out of his deal after only two seasons in Los Angeles, and I openly laughed aloud, stating that if Boras could find him $1 more in a new contract he would look at L.A. in his rear view mirror and escape the bad press that always seems to surround him.

Now we come to find out that Boras has struck a deal with Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein on a new long-term deal in Boston. I have been on the radio for over 10 years in Boston and can assure you that the "Fenway Faithful" and various members of the sports media will eat Drew alive and eventually run him out of town. Drew does not have the personality for Boston and he will fold under the tough media scrutiny that surrounds each player who ever puts on a Red Sox uniform. Boston comes in with a 10 on the richter scale compared to some of the softer media towns that he has played in throughout his mostly underachieving career.

Sports talk radio is intense and passionate in Boston and the various sports pages can destroy a player’s confidence after a bad three-game series at home. Drew has proven that he is not wired properly for a town that recently won a World Series in 2004 and has to live beneath the shadow of the New York Yankees. I give Drew two seasons in Boston before Epstein and the rest of the Red Sox organization gets sick and tired of his act and looks to unload him on another owner who thinks they can get a few big statistical seasons out of him in a new fan-friendly environment.

I just hope that every die-hard Red Sox fan understands that Drew stayed in the lineup in L.A. during the 2006 season in the hopes of cashing even a bigger deal after he drove in 100 runs for the first time in his career. He showed no loyalty to the Dodgers and will continue to only care about the material things in life.
