Michigan can’t complain about BCS results

In future, Wolverines should toughen non-conference schedule, play later

If Michigan coach Lloyd Carr wants his team to have a shot at the national title, the Wolverines need to schedule tougher non-conference opponents, for starters, writes MSNBC.com's Michael Ventre.

In 2007, Michigan finishes its season again with Ohio State on Nov. 17. In 2008, the showdown game is set for Nov. 22. If another scenario takes place like this one, the Wolverines would be wise to start bracing themselves now for future rejection.

And Michigan’s non-conference schedule could stand to be strengthened. This year the Wolverines played Vanderbilt, Central Michigan, Notre Dame and Ball State — not bad, but not good enough to pound one’s chest over with the BCS if the Big Ten should have a down year like it did in 2006. Next year they’re set to open with Eastern Michigan. In 2008, they have Miami of Ohio.

Michigan plays a good schedule, but not a formidable one. If it had played a more impressive schedule in 2006, it might have made a difference in the computer rankings against Florida’s harrowing nonconference gauntlet of Southern Mississippi, Central Florida and Western Carolina.

The final game for Michigan this season is a meeting with USC in the Rose Bowl on January 1. Rather than look at it as a consolation prize, the Wolverines should regard it as the great opportunity it is.

Ohio State is likely to pound Florida in the BCS title game. In fact, the Buckeyes probably would have carved up USC, too. And for all the chatter about how unfair it would have been for Ohio State to be forced to play Michigan again — and indeed, it would have been grossly unfair — the fact is the Buckeyes probably would have whipped them decisively the second time. This just appears to be their year.

But Michigan has a chance now to share a big, prestigious stage on New Year’s Day with USC and renew the old Big Ten-Pacific 10 rivalry, which has a glorious past. Both Michigan and USC have excellent athletes, so this could turn out to be the best bowl game of them all.

Among the subplots is the pairing of two teams that came achingly close to reaching the national championship game but fell short. It’s possible they could sulk from depression and fall flat. But more likely it’ll be two proud programs fighting like mad to restore their pride after suffering setbacks while at the same time laying the groundwork to be considered among the small handful at the top of next season’s preseason rankings.

The ugly breakup is now history for the Michigan Wolverines. They need to get over it. It’s time to put themselves out there again.
