More than a few experts believe Quinn could be chosen first overall in April's NFL draft, and this season I saw something with him that I did not see when he was a junior and it has to do with the composition of his physique.
The 6-foot-4, 230-pounder has built up his body to withstand the rigors of professional football. I guess I would compare Quinn to Warren Moon, a quarterback I played with during my NFL career with the Houston Oilers.
In Houston, Moon played in a run-and-shoot offense, which meant opposing teams were out to put as much pressure on him as possible. I witnessed Moon build his body up to where he actually looked to me bigger out of pads than in pads.
Moon knew that in the run-and-shoot he was not only going to have to make quicker decisions, but he was also going to get hit more.
Quinn took a bunch more hits this season than last season, but he never had to come out of a game -- that's a testament to how well he strengthened his body to take the hits that came his way. He understood last offseason he had to pad his body to give himself the best chance at staying on the field for the Irish -- something of course that is critical to Notre Dame's success.
And I wasn't the only one that noticed the change in Quinn's physique. I'd be down on the field before games and coaches from the opposing team would look at Quinn and seem to just be in awe of not only his athleticism, but also his size. He was as big as the tight ends on some of the teams Notre Dame faced this season.
Weis' results with quarterbacks speak for themselves (see Tom Brady of the Patriots, who had Weis as his offensive coordinator). With Quinn having had two years to work under Weis, I feel his NFL future is a bright one, especially if he lands with a team where passing is not an afterthought.
It took a while for the light bulb to go on, but when it did, Jonas Gray finally showed the talent many had expected from the blue-chip prospect from Detroit. In a recent interview, Gray, who is rehabbing an ACL injury to get ready for the NFL Scouting Combine, expressed the confidence and support he has for head coach Brian Kelly.
