APThe Chicago Cubs aren't finished spending, and they are now turning their attention to pitching.
According to a Sports Illustrated report, the Cubs, who have already spent $239 million on free agents this offseason, have offered starting pitcher Jason Schmidt a three-year, $45 million contract.
Cubs general manager Jim Hendry told S-I that the $45 million figure was not accurate, but admitted that he was pursuing the veteran right-hander.
Schmidt has spent the last five years of his 12-year career with the San Francisco Giants. He grew up in the state of Washington, and is reportedly reluctant to leave the West coast, having already told the New York Yankees not to bother.
According to the S-I report, the Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Dodgers are the favorites to land Schmidt.
