APEAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo is helping the university in its search for a new football coach.
But he isn't looking at himself for the job.
Izzo, who led the Spartans to a national basketball title in 2000, said Monday that he doesn't expect the list of a half-dozen or so football candidates to include his own name.
Izzo recently has been the subject of Internet and media speculation involving the replacement for fired football coach John L. Smith. Izzo was asked at his weekly news conference if he might become a candidate.
"I think it was far-fetched when it started," Izzo said of the speculation about his possible candidacy.
Izzo acknowledged he has always had an interest in football.
"I've been honored that my name would even be brought up," Izzo said. "Anybody who knows me knows that for longer than I have been here, football has been a love of mine beyond most normal human beings."
Izzo is a football fanatic who said he turned down a chance to coach defensive backs at Cal State-Fullerton in the early 1980s, when Steve Mariucci — his longtime pal — was coaching there.

"I've got some business I want to finish," Izzo said of his work with the basketball program.
Arc's five up, five down: After No. 11 Michigan State's 58-48 upset of No. 3 Ohio State, you'd be a fool to discount the Spartans' national title chances now.
Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 15 points and Evan Smotrycz added 13, helping No. 22 Michigan remain unbeaten at home with a 70-61 win over Illinois on Sunday.
