Teenager can't sign with club outside of U.S. until turns 18 on June 2

MANCHESTER, England - American teenager Freddy Adu is returning home after a two-week trial with Manchester United.

The Ghanaian-born attacking midfielder trained with players from the club’s youth academy, and Red Devils manager Alex Ferguson said Friday he would consider looking at the promising 17-year-old again.

“I can’t do anything with him because he’s not 18,” Ferguson said.

Under FIFA transfer rules, Adu, who plays for MLS club D.C. United, is not allowed to transfer to a club outside the United States until he turns 18 on June 2, 2007.

“To go to one of the worlds biggest clubs and get a chance to train is an honor and a privilege,” Adu told The Sun newspaper earlier this week. “But even if I play well, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll sign me.”

Chelsea has expressed interest in possibly signing Adu at some point.
