Blazers score big in NBA draft; Sonics stink

By trading for Aldridge, Roy, Portland improved most with key moves

By getting Texas' LaMarcus Aldridge, the Blazers scored the biggest haul in the NBA draft, writes MSNBC.com's Ray Glier.

L.A. Clippers
I thought Paul Davis could go in the first round. He will have a career in the NBA and be a 10-point scorer, not a throwaway. Guillermo Diaz is a great athlete who can dunk. He can shoot it standing still, but not off the dribble.

Milwaukee
David Noel is a good athlete and played in a solid system. He is 6-foot-5, but not a ball handler or dynamic scorer. A sixth man waiting to happen, which will make him a lot of money.

C
Boston
The Celtics had a chance for a good point in Randy Foye and they ended up with incomplete players in Rajon Rondo and Sebastian Telfair. I don’t get it.

Cleveland
Shannon Brown won’t play much for these guys with LeBron James and Larry Hughes around. Why didn’t they grab Marcus Williams or Jordan Farmar to address the point guard problem. They got Daniel Gibson, but they could have gotten a better point.

Denver
Leon Powe could have been a first-round pick. I think he will rebound and score in the NBA and help the Nuggets.

Orlando

So who is going to defend in the backcourt? Is Dwight Howard going to have to block shots from people driving around J.J. Redick or posting up Jameer Nelson? Nelson can create some space for Redick. They should have grabbed Rodney Carney.

D-
New York Knicks
There were better players available for the 20th pick. There were. I swear it. Renaldo Balkman averaged just 9.6 points per game at South Carolina. The Knicks getting Mardy Collins brought the grade up to a D-minus from an F.

I
San Antonio
Traded away its lone pick, Damir Markota. Not that the Spurs needed much anyway.

Washington
How do you grade a team that grabs a first-round pick that won’t play in the NBA next season? Olexsiy Pecherov is a 6-11 forward with some range, but it is tough to say how he fits in.

F
Seattle
Sene? What a waste with the 10th pick, especially when the Sonics drafted two young centers previously. Sure, they didn’t want some additional salary, but what a slam on the talent in the draft. Get a player will ya.
