Blazers score big in NBA draft; Sonics stink

By trading for Aldridge, Roy, Portland improved most with key moves

By getting Texas' LaMarcus Aldridge, the Blazers scored the biggest haul in the NBA draft, writes MSNBC.com's Ray Glier.

Ray Glier
On a day when trades dominated the news, it makes sense that the team with the best haul only kept one of the three players it drafted — and ended up with four picks.

The Trail Blazers, who drafted Tyrus Thomas, Joel Freeland, James White but only kept Freeland, made all sorts of moves to get the players they wanted, while others like Memphis and Minnesota also made moves to grab touted prospects.

But read on for a complete NBA draft report card.

A
Blazers

In a roundabout, convoluted, unorthodox way, the Blazers got two of the most NBA-ready players and also two of the five best. Brandon Roy is a versatile guard who can handle, shoot, defend. He plays both ends and was the most complete guard in the draft. LaMarcus Aldridge solves issues inside and could have been the No. 1 player taken overall. Portland also added point guard Sergio Rodriguez in a trade with Phoenix.

A-
Memphis
The Grizzlies got tougher in the backcourt with Kyle Lowry and they really helped their athleticism by reportedly getting Rudy Gay from the Rockets. Shane Battier, who Memphis gave up, is a solid pro, but Gay has the better upside.

Minnesota
The T-Wolves get one of the handful of players who will be an impact rookie next season. Randy Foye gets to play with Kevin Garnett, which should also help his game. Foye is accustomed to adversity, so he will handle himself well as Minnesota figures out its direction.

New Jersey
Marcus Williams slipped right to the surprised Nets to give them a top-shelf backup to Jason Kidd. Josh Boone rebounds and defends and that is fine for a team with Kidd, Carter, and Jefferson. New Jersey absolutely needed a big man and they got one in Boone.

B+
Charlotte

The Bobcats get their scorer, the one guy who can fill it up and is a fearless player. Morrison can score and play off Emeka Okafor and Raymond Felton. Morrison has a confident streak in him that tells me he is going to exceed expectations in the NBA. He also can help sagging ticket sales.

Chicago

Thomas has an attitude that will get in the face of LeBron James and swat some shots. I think that’s why the Bulls got him; to combat James as he comes to the hoop. Thomas can move and he has some nasty. Thabo Sefolosha is a 6-6 guard who can also deal with James and Washington’s Gilbert Arenas.

New Orleans
The Hornets had another good draft in filling a need for big men. Hilton Armstrong and Cedric Simmons are 6-10 guys who can run and move.

Utah
Ronnie Brewer was a top 10 player in this draft and he went No. 14. Not a bad get for the Jazz. Utah also gets an exciting player like Dee Brown and a good rebounder like Paul Millsap. From 1998 to 2004, no team drafted as badly as these guys, but after getting Deron Williams in 2005, the Jazz have got it right two years in a row.

B
Atlanta
Matched against top-shelf competition, he scored and he rebounded. Remember the game against LSU and how Tyrus Thomas was supposed to rule inside? Williams went for 23 points and kept Duke in the game. He is not even 6-foot-8, but Williams can get things done and help the Hawks with interior defense and offense. Williams is a noce piece, but the Hawks still should have grabbed a point guard like Marcus Williams or a combo guard like Brandon Roy. Williams is solid, but the No. 5 pick has to be more than solid.

Indiana
Shawne Williams is 6-foot-9 with guard skills. There are questions about his work ethic, but he really improved in just one year at Memphis, so he must have worked hard enough to do that. Of all the second-round picks, I think James White of Cincinnati could be the one guy who takes off in the NBA.

Philadelphia
Rodney Carney helps the Sixers on defense. He can also run with Iverson and Webber and make this a better team. But Philly still has a lot of work to do even after getting a very good player like Carney.

Sacramento
Quincy Douby can light it up. Mike Bibby can’t always carry the load offensively, so this is a good get. If Joe Johnson can bring the ball up for the Hawks and get it across half-court, Douby, who is not considered a handler, can at least do the same for the Kings and rest Bibby.

B-
Dallas
Maurice Ager can run the floor and score. He averaged 19 a game at Michigan State, but better learn the art of spacing to play with the Mavs. Right now, he'll need to improve in his certain nuance to get to spots for Dallas and help them.

Detroit
Iowa State’s Will Blalock is a small guard at 6-1, but he is a very strong point guard and can pass it. A good get for the Pistons.

Golden State

The Warriors filled the hole in their middle with a shot blocker. They have some parts outside the lane, but they needed size. O’Bryant is the size. He will have to run with Baron Davis and Jason Richardson if he wants to get his hands on the ball because they like to play with it.

Houston
The Rockets needed more athleticism and did not get it in the reported trade for Shane Battier. They had it with Rudy Gay and moved him to Memphis. Battier takes some pressure off Yao Ming inside and he allows Tracy McGrady to play as a 2. Steve Novak can take some pressure off Ming with his outside shooting. That’s a nice pick. Battier, I think, is a system pick. A guy valued for what he can do in the Rockets’ system.

L.A. Lakers
Jordan Farmar was the only UCLA player who showed up for the national championship game against Florida. He is a point guard who could be a starter. A better athlete than given credit for he can shoot and hawks the ball on the point. Farmar also gives the Lakers the ball-handling guard they missed in the Phoenix series.

Toronto
Andrea Bargnani. We’ll see. We criticized the Raptors for taking Charlie Villaneuva and he turned out to be very good and it did not take much time (but he was drafted by a different regime). The Raptors needed defense. So why not Tyrus Thomas, a shot blocker? They wanted more boards, so why not Aldridge?
