Barry Bonds declined to discuss steroids in an interview with ESPN, but did say the allegations hurt, the network reported Tuesday.

"I'm only human," Bonds said, ESPN reported.

Bonds said Major League Baseball and his attorneys have asked him not to discuss steroids, ESPN reported.

Bonds did say he would be hurt if baseball were to put an asterisk next to his records, ESPN reported.

"It would hurt. I would be disappointed," he said, ESPN reported. Bonds added that he believed that would happen, ESPN reported.

Bonds also said he didn't consider baseball's investigation into steroids as a personal attack, saying it's best for the sport to examine the entire era, ESPN reported.

The Giants star said he's trying to be a happier person, trying to be liked more, ESPN reported. He blames himself for much of his image problems, and he apologized for not handling his emotions well in public, ESPN reported.

Although many public figures, including Jesse Jackson and actor Danny Glover, has said race is a factor in the investigation into Bonds and how he's perceived, Bonds said he doesn't think race plays a part, ESPN reported.

Bonds said he was buoyed by recent public support from Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols, and he hopes Pujols breaks his single-season home run record, ESPN reported.
