Peyton Manning told the Indianapolis Star that he's halfway through his NFL career. So what's that mean? Eight more years would give him a chance to break all of Dan Marino's NFL passing records.
And, with any luck, more chances at reaching at winning a Super Bowl.
"Yeah, I guess that I'll be handing off on the 'stretch' play when I'm an old man, huh?" Manning told ESPN.com referred to the Colts' staple running play. "It might take a little more to stretch when I'm 38 years old."
If Manning follows through with that plan, he'll play through the 2013 season for a total of 16 seasons. He is under contract through the 2012 season, ESPN reported, and wants to be a "Colt for life." Indianapolis owner Jim Irsay also wants Manning to end his career as a Colt.
The two-time MVP hasn't missed a game in his career, appearing in 108 straight regular-season contests. With that luck, he could double his current career totals of 2,769 completions, 4,333 attempts, 33,189 passing yards, 244 touchdown passes and 130 interceptions and pass Marino in every category.
"I've been lucky from a health standpoint, and I feel really good," Manning told ESPN. "The injuries I've had, we've been able to deal with them. I don't see, at least now, why I can't play 16 seasons."
The nation grieved for those hurt, killed and affected by the Boston Marathon bombings. After one of the suspects was caught on Friday — following a day-long lockdown and manhunt — sports returned to Boston over the weekend.
"You'll be sitting watching [tape] and all of a sudden the playoff game will pop up and it kind of forces you to confront it again," Manning told ESPN. "But this is a really mature team. We've had some changes, but a lot of the guys here have been through it. We've just got to find a way to finish the deal. There's still time, with this group here, to finish what we want to accomplish."
CSN: The Super Bowl's golden anniversary will be held in the Golden State. The new stadium, which opens in 2014, in Santa Clara will host Super Bowl L two years later, the NFL announced Tuesday.
