The point is Florida is a model to be followed and a way for college basketball teams to escape the swarming, all-over defenses that seemed to dominate college basketball in 2006. The low-scoring games you saw were not a result of kids not being to hit a wide-open 15-footer.
There were no wide-open 15-footers! Help defense always showed up in time to contest a shot because the extra pass was not made. That’s why it was hard for shooters to find a safe spot on the floor.
There was another play in the national championship game that stood out and demonstrated why the Gators are a model. Florida’s Lee Humphrey, who had been draining open 3-pointers and was full of confidence, was looking at a wide open 3 with about 10 minutes to play.
I’m thinking it's as good as a layup if he shoots it. Humphrey was thinking layup, too, but not for himself. He saw Al Horford running the floor and passed the ball for a Horford layup.
It was a trademark play for Florida.
There are college football coaches around the country this spring and summer who are going to different campuses studying innovative ideas. For instance, there are disciples now of West Virginia’s spread offense and Morgantown hotels are doing brisk business as coaches from around the country show up to find out how the offense carved up Georgia in the Sugar Bowl.
Donovan ought to export what he was able to get his kids to understand this season and that was to share the ball.
Duke relied too much on J.J. Redick and Shelden Williams. Villanova relied too much on its three-point shooters and did not get its big men involved.
UCLA’s Jordan Farmar had nobody to run with in the championship game. Kansas was having a great run until it broke down and resorted back to the dribbling and one-on-one play that characterized its play in November. The Baby Jays lost to Bradley when they had 11 assists on 26 baskets.
Florida had 26 baskets in the national championship game. There were 21 assists.
The Gators are walking down the runway now. When you are the only I-A school to win your last game, outside of the NIT, people should pay attention to how you did it.
