George Mason finally comes back to reality

No. 11 Patriots stumble badly in Final Four loss to Florida

George Mason's Will Thomas wipes his face. The Patriots lost to Florida in the Final Four on Saturday.

After outrebounding a much-bigger UConn team, George Mason had only 27 rebounds to Florida’s 40.

“We did not show that natural rhythm we had the last few weeks at both ends of the floor,” Larranaga said. “Part of it was their offensive rebounding. We didn’t get the long rebounds that led to breakouts where we got started well. We fell behind. We dug ourselves a hole.”

The Patriots trailed by as much as 10 in the first half, but got within one twice before the break. Then they got sloppy with the ball, and Taurean Green let fly with a couple of 3-pointers that gave Florida a 31-26 lead at halftime.

Halftime deficits against Wichita State and UConn didn’t ruffle George Mason. But they came out of the intermission even flatter than they were in the first half. They missed their first six shots and didn’t make a field goal until there was 14:32 left.

By that time, Florida had a 43-30 lead.

“It didn’t change anything,” Butler said. “We just had to regroup, keep our poise and fight and claw our way back.”

The Patriots got the margin down to single digits once, pulling to 64-55 on Folarin Campbell’s 3-pointer with 4:48 to play. But the Gators made their free throws and kept the ball out of George Mason’s hands with three straight offensive rebounds in the last two minutes.

When the final buzzer sounded, the dejected-looking Patriots trotted off the floor. They’d taken the country on a wonderful ride and given hope to little guys everywhere. But in a sadly familiar end, humor and heart were no match for power and size.

“It was an amazing run,” Butler said. “Unfortunately, it had to come to an end.”
