ReutersQ: What's in store for Mike Brey at Notre Dame? Talk about a team that underachieved this year.
— Barry, New York
A: Three straight seasons of not going to the NCAAs. That hurts. But if John MacLeod can last eight seasons at Notre Dame — five of them losing seasons — Brey can make it to Year 7.
Here are the records in the first four years: 20-11, 22-11, 24-10, 19-13.
Last year's team went 17-12 and 9-7 in the Big East. They tanked late with three losses and missed the NCAA tournament. One more win and they were in and Brey would not be getting fried on the hot seat.
But look where the program was before Brey arrived. Six losing seasons in 10 years. Matt Doherty took off for North Carolina and Brey, who was turned down for the job in 1999, jumped in and made things work.
Notre Dame went to the NCAA tourney in 1990. It did not go again until 2001 and Brey was the coach. The Irish had five straight winning seasons in the Big East until this season.
No question Notre Dame under-achieved with a veteran team. It does not look good on the coach when the first nine losses of the Big East schedule are by a total of 27 points. It makes it look like the coach was getting his head handed to him by the guy on the other bench.
Brey does not need to miss the NCAAs again. He should feel uncomfortable. Another 6-10 Big East season and he may be out of a job.
Q: Do you think if Michigan beats Minnesota they can feel comfortable when selection Sunday comes?
— Michigan fan, Marshall, Mich.
A: They didn't. They shouldn't.
Michigan has lost 7 of 9 games. It just lost to a team it hammered by 22 on Feb. 22.
The Wolverines were 8-8 in the Big Ten and had a chance to Dance with a high RPI (37). But after Temple's upset of George Washington and perhaps another conference tournament upset brewing, Michigan is going to get left out of the dance.
How can they get in when they don't have the look of a tournament team? Watching them against Minnesota left you wondering if they knew what they were playing for. The effort did not look 100 percent.
They were in with a win, but they lost to a team that was 5-9 in the Big Ten and tried to give the game away with poor foul shooting down the stretch.
Michigan has been hurt by injuries, but they have played well before this season without certain players. It's over. They're out.
CBT: With all the hand-wringing the media does in regards to the NCAA and its rulebook, there may not be a rule in all of college basketball that has been able to unite the masses like the new early entry deadline
