Still golden: Davis wins speedskating Cup title

U.S. star claims overall 1,000 meter crown, edges countryman Cheek

HEERENVEEN, Netherlands - American speedskater Shani Davis outperformed teammate Joey Cheek to win the overall World Cup title in the 1,000 meters on Saturday.

Olympic champion Davis clocked 1 minute, 8.91 seconds, while Cheek came in 13th and finished second in the overall rankings. Jan Bos of the Netherlands was second in 1:09.00, while Jeremy Wotherspoon of Canada was third.

Davis won gold in the 1,000 and silver in the 1,500 at the Turin Olympics. Davis and teammate Chad Hedrick feuded during the games after Davis pulled out of the team pursuit relay.

“This is awesome,” Davis told Dutch Television. “After all the controversy and tension at the Olympics, I wanted to show people at home that my priority is skating.”

Davis said he wants to escape the media hype.

“Don’t be surprised if you see me living and coaching in Holland in the future,” he said.

On the women’s side, Ireen Wust of the Netherlands won the 1,000 meters in 1:15.46. Anni Friesinger of Germany finished second in 1:15.75, while Chira Simionato of Italy was third.

Friesinger clinched the overall title, ahead of Simionato and Jennifer Rodriguez of the United States.

Friesinger finished fourth at the Turin Olympics in her strongest event — the 1,500.

“Turin wasn’t too successful for me, but it’s been a great season,” Friesinger said.

In the World Cup circuit, Friesinger won three gold medals in the 1,000 and two gold and a silver in the 1,500.

Cindy Klassen of Canada claimed the overall title in the 3,000 in 4:02.79, ahead of Claudia Pechstein of Germany and Maren Haugli of Norway.
