ReutersHEERENVEEN, Netherlands - American speedskater Shani Davis outperformed teammate Joey Cheek to win the overall World Cup title in the 1,000 meters on Saturday.
Olympic champion Davis clocked 1 minute, 8.91 seconds, while Cheek came in 13th and finished second in the overall rankings. Jan Bos of the Netherlands was second in 1:09.00, while Jeremy Wotherspoon of Canada was third.
Davis won gold in the 1,000 and silver in the 1,500 at the Turin Olympics. Davis and teammate Chad Hedrick feuded during the games after Davis pulled out of the team pursuit relay.
“This is awesome,” Davis told Dutch Television. “After all the controversy and tension at the Olympics, I wanted to show people at home that my priority is skating.”
Davis said he wants to escape the media hype.
“Don’t be surprised if you see me living and coaching in Holland in the future,” he said.
