Men's 500-meter speedskating
Apolo Anton Ohno safely advanced from his heat in 500-meter short track on Wednesday, giving him two more chances to win medals on the next-to-last night of the Winter Olympics.
In his only race, Ohno was third off the starting line, but surged past two skaters to grab the lead with just over a lap to go. He crossed the line comfortably ahead, his right fist in the air and a big smile on his face.
Ohno, who already has captured a bronze medal at the Turin Games, advanced to the quarterfinals of the 500 on Saturday night. He’s also part of the U.S. 5,000 relay team, which already qualified for the medal final.
The other U.S. skater, Anthony Lobello, crashed out of his heat. The first-time Olympian from Tallahassee, Fla., was in second place when he got a little too low going through the turn, losing his balance and slamming into the pads.
Women's 1,000-meter speedskating
Americans Hyo-Jung Kim and Kimberley Derrick advanced to the quarterfinals of the women’s 1,000 meter short track speedskating competition today.
Kim had a time of 1:36.182 in her heat. Derrick had a time of 1:33.812 in her heat. The finals are held Saturday.
The fastest time of all the heats was 1:31.504 by Sun-Yu Jin of South Korea.
Men's curling
Pete Fenson couldn’t lead the United States to the Olympic gold medal game, losing to Canada in the curling semifinals.
Now the U.S. skip could leave Italy with a bronze — or nothing more than some new pizza recipes.
Canada clinched at least a silver medal with an 11-5 victory on Wednesday night and forced the Americans to play in the consolation game for third place. That would be the first Olympic curling medal — men’s or women’s — for the United States.
But a loss on Friday and Fenson, who owns a pair of pizza restaurants in northern Minnesota, is going home empty-handed. And that would extend the shutout for the United States, which saw its highly touted women’s team fail to qualify for the medal round.
