CESANA, Italy - Ilse Broeders and Jeannette Pennings of the Netherlands walked away from a nasty crash on the opening run of the women’s Olympic bobsled at the Turin Games on Monday.
Entering the 15th curve on the 19-curve track, the pair’s sled — with Broeders driving — flipped on its side and continued to slide down the course. Netherlands-1 then rolled over again at turn 18 with the two women’s helmeted heads dragging along the ice.
But after they came to a stop, the two women got out and walked away. Pennings was crying as they made their way back to the finish area. The sled appeared to have survived the wreck.
Before the crash, there had been no accident since the luge competition, which featured several wicked spills, finished last week.
The Dutch finished in 1 minute, .13 seconds. Although there was no word on any possible injuries, the duo did not make their second run.
