TURIN, Italy - Canadian ice dancers Marie-France Dubreuil and Patrice Lauzon withdrew from the free dance Monday night following her injury in a horrific fall the previous night.

X-rays of Dubreuil’s back, pelvis and hip all were negative, and she was treated with ice and compression to reduce swelling. But the Canadian team said Dubreuil suffered a “muscular injury” and the duo did not bother to warm up Monday night.

They were in sixth place.

“She is hurting from the knee to the lower back,” Lauzon said Monday morning. “She was not able to walk yesterday.”

Dubreuil and Lauzon were almost finished with their original dance program when she crashed hard to the ice. During their final lift, she was in a split with both her hands wrapped around Lauzon’s arm. But as he spun her around quickly, her hands slipped and she fell hard on her right hip and knee. He fell, too.

She doubled over in pain when they were done, and couldn’t put any weight on her right leg as she and Lauzon left the ice. Lauzon carried her out of the arena.

“That never happened so far for a dance lift,” Lauzon said. “Perhaps there was too much force in the rotation.”
