SESTRIERE, Italy - Pierre-Emmanuel Dalcin of France was fined $3,800 for making an obscene gesture after his disappointing run in the weather-disrupted Olympic men’s super-G race.

Race referee Guenter Hujara said Sunday that the fine, the maximum penalty the race jury could impose, was severe because the gesture had been directed either against the jury or the spectators.

“It was right in the camera,” said Hujara, who called it a warning to other racers.

The 28-year-old Dalcin had been leading the super-G when officials abandoned the event after only 17 racers because of bad weather. When conditions improved later in the afternoon, the super-G was restarted from scratch, wiping out Dalcin’s result.

At the time, he criticized the decision.

In the afternoon restart, Dalcin missed a gate near the end of the course. He skied to the finish, shoulders slumped, then whipped around and made an obscene gesture as he looked up the course.

While skiers regularly show their anger by yelling, slamming their poles or throwing around a poorly prepared set of skis, obscenity is rare.
