CARSON, Calif. - Fresh off her record 300th international appearance, Kristine Lilly was selected Wednesday for the U.S. women’s team’s training camp in preparation for the prestigious Algarve Cup.
Lilly, Abby Wambach, Briana Scurry and Christie Rampone were among the veterans chosen by coach Greg Ryan. The 26 women will train at the Home Depot Center from Feb. 6-19 before the squad is trimmed for the tournament, to be played from March 9-15 in Portugal.
Lilly got her 300th cap against Norway in the Four Nations event in China last month, a tournament the United States won as Lilly scored three goals. Nineteen players from that team were invited to the camp, with only defender Lori Chalupny absent. She is recovering from a concussion.
The only player making her U.S. women’s team roster debut is forward Natasha Kai, the leading scorer for the U.S. Under-21 team in 2004 before injuries kept her off the national teams in 2005. Kai, a former star at the University of Hawaii, becomes the first player from that state to train with the full women’s national team.
