Vanderbilt QB Cutler moves up in NFL draft

Strong arm, quick release puts him in debate with Young, Leinart

Now the Cutler did it.

First Texas quarterback Vince Young shook up the pecking order in the NFL draft with his performance in the Rose Bowl against Southern California.  Now Vanderbilt quarterback Jay Cutler is stating his case at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama.

Cutler closed the 2005 season with a flourish, passing for 1,410 yards and 13 touchdowns in his last four games against South Carolina, Florida, Kentucky and Tennessee.

Then the 6-4 Cutler blew away the scouts during Senior Bowl practices with his cannon arm and quick release.

“He’s the No. 1 quarterback on my draft board,” said NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock.  “I have him ahead of Matt Leinart.  I have him ahead of Vince Young.  And I know after this week that some NFL scouts feel the same way.”

Jeff Fisher of the Tennessee Titans is coaching Cutler and the South squad.  His team owns the third overall pick in the draft. Mike Nolan of the San Francisco 49ers is overseeing the North team. His club owns the second overall pick, although the Niners used the first overall pick on quarterback Alex Smith last season and are hoping that USC running back Reggie Bush will still be there at No. 2.

The Titans may not be able to restructure quarterback Steve McNair’s contract, which includes a whopping $50 million bonus in March.  Even if they do, the choice of taking Young or Cutler is a possibility.

“First of all, we think Steve is still a valuable asset to our team,” Fisher said.  “However, it is time to address the idea of preparing to replace him in the future.”

So, even with Billy Volek as the backup to McNair, Fisher admits the Titans will look at drafting a quarterback and Cutler certainly has made an impression.

“He’s made the adjustments we’ve asked of him and has done a very nice job,” Fisher said.  “He takes very well to coaching.”

And Cutler does not lack confidence.

“I think I’m right there with Matt (Leinart) and Vince Young in every aspect,” Cutler said.

So is it time to revise that draft?  Well, that all depends on new Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak.  The longtime offensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos took the Texans’ job and will get his choice of coaching Bush, Leinart, Young or Cutler. If he’s sold that David Carr could develop into a Pro Bowl quarterback, then the pick will be for Bush.

But what if Texans owner Bob McNair buckles under the pressure of local sponsors and selects Young, a Houston native who grew up less than two miles from Reliant Stadium.  Maybe McNair is not about to let Young slip to No. 3, where Tennessee might take him.  Then the Texans would have to face Young twice a year as division rivals.

“Bush is a great player, but I don’t think he’s better than Vince Young,” Texans defensive end Gary Walker said.  “In the Rose Bowl, Young was the best player on the field.”

That’s the sentiment in Texas.  But by March, the Texans will pay Carr $8 million to extend his contract for three more seasons.  Then they might shop him and select Young or keep him and select Bush.

With Sean Payton as their new coach, the New Orleans Saints will go with a quarterback with the No. 2 pick.  The pick will either be Leinart or Young.  Maybe we can throw Cutler into the mix.

Despite their 3-13 season in 2005, the Saints are not that far away from playoff contention.  Between 2002 and 2004, they were 9-7, 8-8 and 8-8 and have playmakers such as running back Deuce McAllister and wide receivers Joe Horn and Donte’ Stallworth.

Tennessee is No. 3 followed by the New York Jets at No. 4. With the buzz Cutler created at the Senior Bowl, Jets general manager Terry Bradway may have a bevy of trade offers.  If Bradway believes quarterback Chad Pennington can come back from two shoulder surgeries, then the Jets are in a prime position to add extra picks for a team that covets Cutler.

One of those teams could be the Oakland Raiders, who have the sixth overall pick, but have yet to hire a coach.
