Reader responses to Kwan making Olympics
WINTER OLYMPICS |

Michelle Kwan sealed her spot on the Olympic team, proving she is healthy enough to skate in front of a five-person monitoring committee on Friday. Here are some of your thoughts on Kwan making the squad and going for the gold medal that has eluded her the past two Olympics:
The fact that she's going is the only reason for me to watch any of the Olympics. We ought to pray that she has the skate of her life and wins the darn thing. She's been a great champion for a long time and deserves this last chance to seal the deal.
—Jim Ward, Sierra Vista, Ariz.
What a waste! She's too old and will surely be beaten by another teenager who has more stamina and is more agile that she is. Whether we want to believe it or not, when competing at the Olympic level, you only get one really good chance. If she medals at the Olympics, it won't be because she won, it will be because someone performed worse. Even at her prime, Michelle was inconsistent. It cost her the Gold medal at her first Olympics and the Silver medal at the last Olympics. What will it cost the Olympic Team this year?
—Paul Heine, Springfield, Va.
Michelle deserves another shot at a gold medal. She is one of our most talented and gifted athletes and appears to be a great human being. She has represented the United States well in the past two Olympic competitions and I would like nothing better than to see her take the gold. Good luck, Michele!
—R. Brown, New Jersey
I think it is awesome, and I hope the third time's the charm for Kwan, with Olympic gold. She is absolutely one of the top three skaters in the United States, and belongs on the team going to Turin. It's just unfortunate the groin injury stopped her from a shot at her tenth national title.
—Michelle Garot, Green Bay, Wis.
It's simple. If you're injured and can't meet the requirements in the allowed time, sorry, next person please. The decision made by the U.S. committee to allow Kwan to compete was about winning and politics, nothing else. Certainly she is one of the best, and gold medal or not, has nothing to prove. What would you prefer to be known as? One of the best in the world or possibly a three-time Olympic loser? There comes a time when when the best need to step aside and let the next generation move up.
—Kevin Parks, Bel Air, Md.
If this committee thinks Kwan is ready and able to compete, then she is. It is only fair that she gets what is likely her last chance to go for gold. The younger ones (as she was when she was knocked out by the granting of Kerrigan's petition) will have their chance down the line. Besides, Kwan will bring with her a larger viewership and possibly higher TV ratings than the younger skaters would.
—Carol, Williamsport Ind.
Absolutely Michelle Kwan should go to the Olympics. Even if Michelle is not at her best, she is heads above almost every other female skater in the world. She has contributed so much to figure skating in the United States that she deserves another chance at the Olympics. How could anyone dispute that?
—Lanette Holmquist, Grove City, Minn.
Kwan will not medal. All the old skaters perform slow, cautious, boring routines, while some unknown will hit the ice, giving it her all, and take the gold home. U.S. Figure Skating would do better to put the bumped alternate in the competition since she will give it her all, awe the judges, and have a fair chance to medal. Kwan could not win the gold in her prime, but now she will? Good luck with that strategy.
