Violence during tie between Egypt, Morocco caused by Libyan fans

Egyptian riot police clear Libyan supporters, who were there from a previous match against Ivory Coast, from the stand after they started damaging seats and throwing projectiles at Egyptian supporters.

CAIRO, Egypt - Fans ripped plastic seats from the stands and hurled them at black-uniformed, helmeted Egyptian riot police Tuesday at the African Cup of Nations.

The violence during a 0-0 tie between Egypt and Morocco appeared to be caused by Libyan fans who remained in the crowd of 74,000 at Cairo International Stadium following the first game of the doubleheader, a 2-1 victory by Libya over Ivory Coast.

Riot police forced Libyan fans from the stadium, sparking scuffles. It was not known if there were any injuries or arrests.

In the opener, Ivory Coast advanced to the quarterfinals as Didier Drogba got his second goal of the tournament. Drogba scored in the 10th minute, and Arouna Kone made it 2-0 off Drogba’s cross in the 28th. Abdelsalam Khamis scored Libya’s goal in the 41st off a cross from Jihad Muntaser.

Ivory Coast (2-0) leads Groups A with six points, followed by Egypt (1-0-1) with four, Morocco (0-1-1) with one and Libya (0-2) with none. The top two teams advance.
