Readers share thoughts on Davis incident

Majority think Knick was right to protect his wife

Why are we so quick to form opinions before the facts are clear? Do we assume she is innocent, because she is a player's wife? Or a woman? We don't have enough information to form an intelligent opinion.
-- Scott, Normal, Ill.

This is a decent man who loves his wife. Of course he would rush to help her if he thought she was in danger! I think that it was unfair that he was even ejected from the game. He didn't swing at anyone and there was no harm done. If anyone should be penalized it should be the drunk fan who was harassing his wife.
-- Karrie, Boston

Ok. I'm tried of all the hype of lasts years brawl. This was a totally different situation. Ron Artest had a beer thrown on him, and had no excuse of going into the stands. There was no immediate threat. Now personally some fan would judge Antonio Davis for running in the stands, but people forget about one major thing. "Family comes first!" Now if it were me I would have not hesitated in running in the stands and David Stern should keep his mouth shut on this one. They play a game, and when that game is over they do still have family. It amazes me how people react since the brawl and it's sickening that they would think he was in the wrong. So to you Antonio Davis don't say sorry that was totally justified..Good for you!
-- Joe, Cincinnati, Ohio

Correct and appropriate. The NBA should apologize to him for all this fuss over something ANY man should have done.
-- Brian C. Barnes, Round Rock, Texas

If his wife indeed was in danger then his charging into the stands to protect her is a moot point. Isn't that what spouses are supposed to do?
-- William Foerster, Kingsport, Tenn.

I'm sure his wife is a grown woman who could have handled this problem on her own. If he cannot focus on doing his job when his wife is in the stands, maybe she should stay home.
-- Beck Bates, Lumberport, W.V.

This is simply another example of overpaid athletes and their richer-than-thou family members feeling free to do whatever they want, whenever they want, and to whomever they want. Antonio Davis's rush to support his spoiled wife's criminal actions deserves to be punished, as does his wife's physical attack on the fan. Hopefully, the fan's lawsuit will result in an outcome forcing other hopelessly spoiled athletes, and their useless families, to have second thoughts about physically attacking those who so faithfully provide their outlandish incomes.
-- Whitney G. Freeman, Kennewick, Wash.

Let me first start by saying I truly understand the position of Mr. Stern and the league. However, I feel that the suspension is far too harsh considering the actions ensuing the situation as well as what was perceived to be an imminent threat to both his wife and his kids. No rule should be so black and white that it doesn't factor extenuating circumstances as well as taking into account the overall history of the individual in question. Were his actions malicious? Was he acting belligerent and without self control? The answer is no! He was calm and poised the whole time and never resisted being escorted out of the stands once he knew his family was safe and was not in any danger. Make no mistake about it yes he violated league policy and yes he should be reprimanded for his actions but, to suspend him five days? I think that is ridiculous, very excessive and a blatant over reaction by both Mr. Stern and league executives. In this case the crime doesn't match the punishment and I think he should appeal but in wake of this new matter of being sued and he being the victim. I'm sure Mr. Davis has far more pressing things on his mind. Simply put in this case a fine would have been sufficient and well within reason. The true question here should be not what you think about Antonio? But what would the league executives do as well as Mr. Stern had he thought his family was in harms way?
-- Greg, Sacramento Calif.
