APBrown is a keeper
University of Texas coach Mack Brown has developed quite a reputation for keeping his players from leaving school to go to the NFL early despite a plethora of talented guys such as WR Roy Williams, QB Chris Simms and RBs Cedric Benson and Ricky Williams having gone through his program.
The latest example is QB Vince Young, the junior who finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting and who has already indicated he will return to Texas. He’s doing that even though many top NFL personnel men think he’ll be a top 10 pick, if not top 5, if he comes out in the draft.
What gives with Brown?
“He does a great job of selling not just the kid, but the whole family on the idea of being their for four years, getting your degree, the whole process,” said Dolphins defensive lineman Vonnie Holliday, who played for Brown at the North Carolina. “He would be a great politician. He could definitely run for governor and win.”
Deion done?
It appears that Baltimore CB Deion “Prime Time” Sanders may hang it up one final time. The 38-year-old Sanders gave that indication this week after snaring the 53rd interception of his career on Monday night against Green Bay.
“There’s a great possibility,” said Sanders, an eight-time Pro Bowl selection. “I’m not going to say if it’s true or not because some things may change and some things may but, but what won’t change is I have five beautiful kids and a beautiful wife at home that I’m thinking seriously about spending a lot more quality time with.”
Sanders, whose family flies in from their residence in Prosper, Tex., for home games, is tied for the team lead with two interceptions in 14 games and two starts. He stressed that the Ravens’ underachieving season won’t affect his ultimate decision.
“The record doesn’t indicate anything with my decision,” Sanders said. “We could go undefeated and it’s no indication. I’m not moved by wins and losses.”
Vick's a little touchy
When Atlanta QB Michael Vick’s struggles against the Tampa Bay defense were brought up on the weekly conference call this week before the Falcons played the Bucs, he wouldn’t hear of it.
“You’re still saying it’s tough for me to handle that defense after what I did to them the last time?” said Vick, who threw for 306 yards and two touchdowns against Tampa in a 30-27 loss at the Georgia Dome Nov. 20.
“Is that what you’re saying? Is that what you’re asking me? You’re asking for an explanation for that? I can’t. I’m sorry.”
Vick then hung up.
On Sunday in the overtime loss to the Bucs, Vick completed 16 of 26 for 161 yards and two touchdowns, but was sacked four times and lost a fumble.
Only room for one
Despite having almost identical stats to Pro Bowl teammate and WR Larry Fitzgerald (92 reception, 1,236 yards and eight TDs), Arizona WR Anquan Boldin (85, 1,240 and 6) was left off the NFC Pro Bowl squad. Welcome to being part of a 4-10 squad. Boldin took the situation in stride.
“My disappointment comes from not making the playoffs, from the losses we had,” Boldin said.
Fitzgerald, 22, has already fulfilled his promise as the No. 3 overall pick in 2004.
“I am not even close to reaching my prime,” Fitzgerald said. “There is so much more I need to do to be an elite player in this league, to achieve (the Pro Bowl) in my second year, I feel pretty good about myself.”
Stunned
If you were surprised to hear Delhomme made the Pro Bowl, you’re part of a group that includes Delhomme.
“It’s something I don’t think about and hadn’t even imagined,” Delhomme said. “I was pretty surprised when (coach John Fox) called my name. I kind of had a good idea about (WR Steve Smith) and (DE Julius) Peppers and then he called Mike Wahle out and I was excited that someone on our O-line got called. When he said my name I was kind of shocked.”
