APSkiing (Freestyle)
The U.S. can nominate up to three athletes per gender in each freestyle discipline (moguls and aerials) based on their World Cup results from June 1 to Jan. 30, 2006. Also, the U.S. Olympic Trials were Dec. 30 at Steamboat Springs, Colo., with the aerials and moguls winners earning automatic berths on the Olympic team.
If spots remain open, they may be filled by the coaching staff.
The United States has five of the top 11 moguls skiers in the world and one or two will almost certainly be left behind when the plane leaves for Turin.
On the men’s side, defending World Cup champ Jeremy Bloom claimed the automatic spot with a win in the trials.
Toby Dawson, Nate Roberts and Travis Mayer have all spent plenty of time on international podiums, too.
For the women, world champion Hannah Kearney claimed her berth in Steamboat Springs. Veterans Shannon Bahrke, Jillian Vogtli and Michelle Roark, as well as newcomer Laurel Shanley, are also expected to contend for spots in Turin.
In aerials, young Ryan St. Onge and Emily Cook grabbed the automatic spots by leading the way at the Olympic Trials.
Jeret “Speedy” Peterson, who won the World Cup title in 2005, and Joe Pack will also battle for spots on the team. Kate Reed and Jana Lindsey lead the way for the women.
