INTELLIGENCE
Peyton is the clear leader here, and might be the craftiest quarterback ever to play the game. True, he’s a product of the Indy system, but it’s hard to imagine anyone being so creative and flexible during a game. The sight of Peyton barking signals — left, right and rear — while gesturing wildly to the defense adds more entertainment to viewing Colts’ games. It’s uncanny how often Peyton makes the right call, instantaneously. Because of his preparation, Peyton is one of the best at being able to find his secondary or tertiary receivers in the Colts’ complex, free-flowing offense. Eli doesn’t have as much freedom to change plays under Giants coach Tom Coughlin, but he’s shown a knack for the timely audible and completion, too. He still hasn’t mastered the art of “looking off” a defensive back, resulting in a couple of costly picks. Both Mannings read defenses well and are clever with the ball, carrying out their fakes long after the ball is handed off to a running back. Peyton, in particular, is the best play-action quarterback since Boomer Esiason and ranks among the best all-time in that department. Edge: Peyton.
