Ohno wins second gold at World Cup meet

Meet will help determine qualifiers for 2006 Turin Games

Apolo Anton Ohno, who won the World Cup 3,000 meters Sunday, earned two golds and one bronze to win the overall meet title.

BORMIO, Italy - Apolo Anton Ohno won the 3,000 meters Sunday, capturing his second gold medal at the World Cup short track speedskating meet.

The American won in 5 minutes, 44.636 seconds, beating South Korea’s Lee Ho-suk and Ahn Hyun-soo in a meet that will help determine qualifiers for the Turin Olympics in February.

Ohno, who finished with two golds and one bronze, won the overall title with 86 points, 10 ahead of Lee.

Jin Sun-yu of South Korea set a world record of 1:30.037 in the women’s 1,000, eclipsing the previous mark of 1:30.171 set last month by Wang Meng of China.

Jin won the overall title with 102 points and anchored the 3,000 relay victory ahead of Canada.

The South Korean quartet of Lee, Song Suk-woo, Oh Se-jong and Seo Ho-jin won the men’s relay ahead of China and the United States.

The World Cup series moves next week to The Hague, Netherlands.
